STORIES: Shadows behind the Wall- Afghanistan
The Psychiatric & Drug Dependency Treatment Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan is the sole government-run hospital of its kind. It has only 60 beds in total and currently possesses only 1 kind of antidepressant and 2 kinds of antipsychotic medicines. The drug dependency ward is for the 10-day detoxification program available to male patients only.
The hospital is overcrowded with patients, and limited in its supplies. Both patients and medical staffs seem to be barely getting by in the given difficult condition.
Experts state that due to the 30 some years of war, PTSD is one of the main reasons for the psychiatric problems in Afghanistan.
